The thing about books, for me is that no character is seen in the same way by any two people. I think this is why Harry Potter was spoiled for me by the films ... as when I was younger I wasn't allowed to read Harry Potter due to the fact that my mum believed that J.K.Rowling was indeed a real life witch. This of course isn't true and so when I grew up I watched the movies, and Lately I've been reading the books and the characters in my head are Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and so on ... not the people described on the pages and no matter how hard I try I can't change that image. The other thing about books, is that you can create and entire world with people who in your mind are real and living their own life's, out of some ink and a bit of really really thin wood. Personally I think that the ability to do that is actual magic, it's physically impossible unless it's pen on paper.
